Sunset from Stan's picture window on the BEACH!
Bull Kelp reminding Gina of pleasant memories in Alaska...
Birds...
Gina & Franc
We arrived in San Diego around 3pm on Friday afternoon. Stan told us not to go to Trader Joe's but we needed to get some beer so we started that way before going to Stan's. We didn't tell him b/c we knew he'd tell us not to. But then when we started driving around looking for it we realized we were starving and even had a headache b/c we were so hungry. We both wanted sushi so we went to iciban where to our happy surprise there was a special for $6.95 which was all we could eat. mmmm Then we dropped by the good will which was across the street, but our stay was short b/c we had to rush to Stan's to get a parking spot-which he was holding for us.
Stan gave us the killer set up, allowing us to crash in his bungalow--The Crow's Nest--which is as close to the beach as you can get without actually being on the beach. It's all windows looking out over the waves. The catch--Gina and I had to sleep together on the futon--a small price to pay when I just drew a line down the middle and ordered her not to cross it. I also threatened a dirty sock in her mouth if she snored. Lucky for her she did not. Just kidding Gina... :) Oooo...turns out I was snoring..lucky for me I didn't really say the dirty sock thing. shew.
We took a long walk down the beach as far as we could go. The lighting was perfect for picture taking, the conversation was good, we met a bunch of folks with jack russel's who were fun to talk to, we talked an man from Montana who was surfing on a Costco board and having a great time, a lot of friendly folks and so pretty.
Came back and Stan showed back up. We moved the futon to face the window and we all sat down, my friends with cocktails and me with a diet coke, watched the remains of the sun, the waves and talking business--drunken style, which was a lot more fun.
Then we started cooking some pad thai then went down to the main house with Stan's Mom Lucy and her friends Jim and Tani. Tani was sleeping and there were too many cooks in the kitchen--it's small and not really my favorite place to hang out--so I sat on the couch and picked up a Smithsonian. Then Jim sat down and asked me to tell him 3 things about myself. I did and then turned the question on him. Well Jim is quite an interesting character. He calls himself, well I can't remember the exact verbiage because of CRS, but a true hippie from the 60's. He's hitch-hiked all over the US, back and forth from east to west. Then he hitched all over Europe and Asia and hung out with various rebel groups because he was interested in them.
Stan, Gina and Lucy made a delicious pad thai dinner and the conversation was great. Later, Stan's friend Mike, a fellow IBM-er, showed up and we sat in the the Crow's Nest yapping for several more hours. They got me psyched to surf, but when I awoke to cloudy skies and chilliness--I bailed. I've been trying to get sick and I'd like to wait until tomorrow when it's supposed to be warm and sunny before I take the plunge--avoiding being sick during the rest of my stay. But I am writing this while watching 50 or more people out there catching really nice waves and it's hard to not go...
Gotta go eat breaky!
